Street Fair Revival – Build a Car, Be a Vendor

On May 11, downtown Montgomery will once again see a massive gathering of vivacious vendors, performers and artists of all types in the second annual Montgomery Street Fair Revival, modeled after the one originally held in 1899. Put on by the civic group Helicity, founder Johnny Veres promises that the Fair will be even bigger and better than last year which attracted over 2,500 people and featured acrobats, fire breathers, belly dancers, musicians, all types of vendors and more.

“The Street Fair will once again bring the greater community together and become the avenue through which Montgomery can enjoy the many creative talents of our local artisans, vendors, performers, and culinary artists extraordinaire – all of the things that make our Capital of Dreams truly unique,” said Veres.

The highlight of this year’s Street Fair will be the Dexter Derby Rally – a soap box derby race with a twist where participants will race their non-motorized automobiles made from scratch down Dexter Avenue. From the 1920s to the 1980s, soap box derby racing was a common occurrence; friends and neighbors would gather and race their homemade cars briskly down the asphalt, hoping to emerge victorious among their fellow competitors. Over the years, this classic pastime has been forgotten and faded from our cherished traditions. This year the Street Fair will bring back this once glorious and integral piece of our culture by hosting the Derby Rally, and Helicity encourages everyone to participate. Racers are challenged to build the most creative car they can imagine, so get together a team and get to work on your car! Applications are due by April 7, 11:59 p.m.

The day will be filled with plenty to see and do for everyone! Face painting, craft-making, storytellers, play areas, and much more will be available for children’s entertainment. All of this will be taking place while aerialists, jugglers, dancers, and musicians are dispersed among the crowds. Night activities will focus on live musical performances to be announced as we get closer to the event. This will be a day to remember on historic Dexter Avenue.

In order to make this Fair the best it can be, the support and from the community is utterly vital. Without the participation of all the wonderful artists, performers and vendors, the Fair will not be the event it has the potential to be. All are encouraged to enter the Dexter Derby Rally and amateurs and professionals are encouraged to apply for a spot as a vendor or entertainer at the Montgomery Street Fair as soon as possible. Sponsors are also still being sought for the Fair.
