The Ligon House has served as the Alabama Governor’s Mansion since 1951 with the inauguration of Governor Persons.

As the blistering, hot part of summer approaches you might be expecting things to cool down … but noooooooooooooooooooo!

With the state of Alabama celebrating the Year of Alabama Food 2013, Governor and Mrs. Bentley have decided to invite everyone to the Governor’s Mansion for an all American/Alabama cookout—Grill with the Governor! On Tuesday evening, July 23 from 6:00 until 8:00 Governor Bentley will be grilling hot dogs on the porte-cochere (or, for those non-Frenchies among us, the carport) of the Mansion lawn.  A Hot Dog Bar will suit the do-it-yourselfers with a variety of condiments to adorn your hot dog with other Alabama food producers being featured as well as cool beverages and desserts. The dress is casual so put on those shorts and sandals and there will be activities for the children as well and toe-tapping music.

Governor Bentley will be grilling hotdogs for the evening’s crowd.

This fun cookout event will benefit the historic Alabama Governor’s Mansion and its ongoing restoration efforts. The Mansion itself will be open for tours so if you missed it at Christmas now is your chance to see the current projects that are happening in this lovely building which has served as the home for Alabama’s First Families since 1951. The Neo-Classical architecturally styled landmark was built in 1907 for the Ligon family and, with its intricate woodwork and grand staircase, features one of the most awesome interiors still remaining in Montgomery today. The sculpture and meditation gardens will be available for you to stroll through, as well.

Tickets to this neat, new event are $50 ($35 for children up to 12 years) and are available for pre-purchase at the Governor’s Mansion Gift Shop at 30 Finley Avenue across from the gate to the Mansion. Since the event is being sponsored by the Friends of the Alabama Governor’s Mansion for restoration projects, donations are tax deductible to the extent of the law.

Mansion decorated for a festive July.

The girls at the Mansion Gift Shop have created wonderful gift baskets filled with all sorts of Alabama goodies, and those attending will have the opportunity to take one of these gorgeous baskets home to enjoy. Everybody attending will receive party favors commemorating their “Grill with the Governor” experience but I’m not going to spoil that surprise.

So if you love an incredible meal with a talented grill-master and farm-to-table freshness, you won’t want to miss this culinary extravaganza like no other. From Gulf Coast seafood, to BBQ, to hot dogs with the Governor — we’re celebrating another Year of Alabama Food. Tickets are available at the Governor’s Mansion gift Shop Monday through Friday 9:00 til 4:00 or contact them at 334-241-8824.
