CIA Yardsale 2013

It’s almost time for the CIA yardsale! No, this isn’t your chance to stock up on spy gear and how-to-engineer-a-coup manuals. No, in this Midtown Montgomery context, CIA stands for Cloverdale-Idlewild Association – one of the most active neighborhood associations in the entire city.

The yard sale is an incredible opportunity to both get rid of that stuff that has been cluttering up your house and get some amazing new things. To preview the event (and encourage you to both donate and attend the sale), MML interviewed Elaine Kieffer, a CIA operative who helps to organize the sale each year. Elaine is chairperson of the CIA’s programs and communications committee.

MML: We live in Cloverdale-Idlewild and are exited about the sale. There is always so much good stuff there. How long has the CIA been doing the yard sale? How did the idea come about?

Kieffer: This is the ninth year for the yard sale. I’m not sure who came up with the idea originally, but it has always been used as a fund-raiser for the CIA. We’ve used the proceeds to pay for our annual spring concert series in the park, benches for the park; really anything that benefits the neighborhood. All of the yard sale items are donated. We have the best people in our neighborhood! Everyone always looks forward to this, both for donating stuff and buying at the sale itself. The yard sale is a hoot!

MML: What are the best-selling items every year?

Kieffer: The sale starts at 7:00 a.m. The volunteers are at the park at 6 a.m. and we are having to fight off the early birds with their flashlights who are wanting to buy before we are even set up! We usually have a huge line of folks waiting for us to open for business right at 7! Furniture, children’s clothes and toys, and electronics are all great sellers!

MML:What are some of the strangest things you’ve sold?

Kieffer: Right off hand, I can’t think of the strangest item sold. Someone did donate used toilet brushes one year! But I can’t remember if they sold or not.

Everybody always sees different items depending on what section they are working. I can say that one of the funniest things I’ve seen is a woman who bought a huge chair trying to jam it into a compact car. We were all wincing over that one!

MML: What advice do you have for folks looking to get the coolest stuff?

My advice to get the best stuff is get there early! We get slammed from 7 until around 9 a.m., people and cars everywhere! Anything that is left over goes to the Faith Rescue Mission.

MML: What else do people need to know?

Kieffer: Well, people should bring cash. There are some pictures of last year’s sale on the photo section of the CIA website. Folks with questions could email me at montgomery.cia@gmail.com.
