From the premiere of a new play in February to a month full of special performances in March, we’d be hard-pressed to say there’s not much going on at the Playhouse these days. On a personal note, may I thank the extraordinary cast and design team that brought Pastime to life: A thousand thanks to Stephen Dubberly, John McWilliams, Scott Page, Matthew Givens, Sarah Adkins, Teri Sweeney, Mariah Reilly, Mike Winkelman, James Treadway, Pamela Upshaw, and Romaro Walker.
March is packed. Here is what is going on:
ON THE MARCH: March 6, 7:30 p.m.
An evening of readings and personal accounts, filled with prose and poetry, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Selma-to-Montgomery March and the passage of the Voting Rights Act, in collaboration with the Southern Poverty Law Center. IRISH VOICES 2015 Edition: MARCH 14, 7:30 p.m.
Back by popular demand, with some new additions, an evening of readings from some of the glorious writing of Ireland. From Friel to Heaney to McCourt to O’Casey to Yeats, the wit and wisdom, poetry and power of this grand isle will make for an enchanted night well-spent. Who knows- you may even hear a tune or two. The Joe Thomas Jr. 3rd Tuesday Guitar Pull: Tuesday, March 17, 7 p.m.
Celebrating the third anniversary of this monthly series. This month’s featured artists brings someone new and the return of two of the Pull favorites. Morgan Rowe joins us for the first time and Zac Martin returns bringing his talented repertoire and Jess Meuse comes back home after starring on the national stage with her dynamic talent. $10 At The door.
HEY OLD FRIEND, SONDHEIM @ 85: March 22 & 23 7:30 p.m.
It’s his birthday! Join us for a celebration of the life and work of one of the theater’s extraordinary artists. These are benefit performances to assist with scholarships for our Playhouse School and for the Alabama Institute for Education in the Arts. A company of talented performers, some of whom have graced the Playhouse stage, will be joining director Randy Foster for this wonderful tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Tickets: $15
