Sing Along For a Good Cause!

HamilTunes-01Unless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, you probably know about the pop culture sensation that is Hamilton. Thanks to its catchy soundtrack, the Tony award-winning musical is everywhere. It’s the hardest ticket to get for any kind of recurring show, and the history-drenched civics lesson was even in the news recently for offering a few words to our Vice President Elect.

The music is undeniably brilliant, and the story offers a window into the formative years of our nation — stories that are absolutely crucial to understanding how we ended up with the nation we have. But it’s next to impossible to get tickets, and the touring company doesn’t look like it’ll be coming to Alabama any time soon. Other than purchasing the soundtrack for personal listening, is there any way that you can take part in the fun (and educational) phenomenon that is sweeping the nation?

If you can’t be in New York City, this Friday in Montgomery, you can experience the next best thing while supporting a good cause. The Jubilee Community Center is hosting HamiltunesMGM, an “American Singalong,” at 9 p.m. There was a performance of the show last week, but that was an all ages adventure for kids. This week’s sing-along is adults only. That doesn’t mean anything suggestive, but it does mean that there’ll be booze — and a greater likelihood that the folks next to you will get your topical political references.

Are you under the impression that you’re the only person who knows about Hamilton and the foundation of the U.S. Treasury Department? You’ll probably meet other people just like yourself, who can wax eloquently about the universal themes of sacrifice and heartbreak that are part of this founding father’s biography. If you’ve ever wanted to be in the “room where it happens,” this kind of networking and socializing can be foundational.

Your admission ticket includes beer, wine and light snacks, as well as participatory musical entertainment. Advance tickets are available online, and tickets will be sold at the door as well. If you’re not comfortable singing on stage, you can sing along from the audience – just like people did last week. You won’t want to throw away your shot.

The all-ages show was a big hit!

All proceeds benefit Jubilee, where art and music find a home in downtown Montgomery. It really is a good cause. The Jubilee Community Center is home to The Sanctuary, where many diverse bands play. It also supports local arts education for underserved youth – an important niche, now that art programs have been squeezed out of many schools. Finally, Jubilee serves as an anchor for economic development along with the adjoining Makerspace. The best show we’ve seen in the city featured the crazy cool band Terror Pigeon, and we never would have gotten the chance if not for Jubilee.

Jubilee is located at 432 S. Goldthwaite St.
