Fight Club for Foodies

File Feb 28, 11 44 11 AMThe first rule of Culinary Fight Club is … have fun!

Last night four area chefs faced off in a competition to see who could improvise under pressure and win over a panel of judges and a hungry crowd at Alabama’s first Culinary Fight Club event. Held at 129 Coosa, the first time event drew a crowd of well over 100 foodies. It even outsold the Chicago event held the same night!

The theme of the evening was Savory Chocolate. Each of the chefs brought their own choice of protein, but they had 45 seconds to choose from 15 provided ingredients in the “pantry.” In the hour that followed, their skills and ability to keep cool under pressure were put to the test.

From scallops served over a white chocolate cheese sauce to cocoa rubbed steak, the flavors were out of the ordinary and showed off the creativity and skills found in Montgomery’s local food scene.

The competitors included Cameron Hodge of The A&P Social, Rocky Prince of IttaBena Montgomery, Deangelo Zeiglar of Amsterdam Café in Auburn, and Vintage Year’s Eric Rivera. Zeiglar took home the taster’s choice award and Hodge became the first ever Culinary Fight Club champ.

The event featured all the high-energy entertainment of popular televised cooking competitions, plus the advantages of a live food event like tastings of the chef’s creation and craft brews from Red Clay Brewing and Monday Night Brewing.

Not only did attendees support their favorite local chefs, they raised funds for a non-profit organization dedicated to provide service and support to hungry men, women and children across the country called Fight2Feed.
