Walk ‘n Wag and the Year of the Brown Earth Dog

Walk ‘n Wag, on October 6, is one of my favorite events of the whole year. I love that having so much fun with our dogs helps raise money for the Montgomery Humane Shelter to help other dogs. I love seeing my friends out in the sunshine at the Blount Cultural Park with their dogs. My dogs love seeing my friends out in the sunshine with their dogs. Vendors offer food for humans and a variety of treats for dogs. Bone Mountain is always a big hit. Vendors also offer fun stuff for dogs like toys and name tags. Subaru always has a machine that makes name tags right on the spot. On the big stage people watch and participate in fun contests with dogs like best costume, most talented, and longest tail. Then there is the mile walk where everybody gets to strut their stuff and, oh yeah, walk ‘n wag. I’m tellin ya–it’s a big fun time.

This year will be special for several reasons. It will be sad, because it will be the first year we are at Walk ‘n Wag without our darlin’ Sweeney Lou. She left us in March and left our hearts broken. We adopted her from the Montgomery shelter was when she just 6 weeks old; she blessed our lives for fifteen years. Last year there was a photo booth, and Sweeney and I had our picture taken together–I keep it on the refrigerator. After she passed, the mood was so grim at our house that something had to be done– so we went to the shelter and adopted another dog. Trevor is a sweet, good looking boy. He has helped all of us. So this year will his first year at Walk ‘n Wag.

This Walk ‘n Wag will also be special because my Tai Chi group is sponsoring both a booth and a dog pack. The Tai Chi Dog Pack–how cool is that? We are inspired to participate because it is the Chinese year of the brown earth dog. Also, we usually have a yearly “awareness” event to inform the Montgomery community about the many benefits of Tai Chi and the classes offered. So this year we are combining Tai Chi awareness with supporting the Montgomery Humane Society in honor of the Chinese year of the brown earth dog. Please notice the amazing brown earth dog illustration by talented member Sunny Paulk.

So there is still plenty of time to get up a dog pack, or sponsor a booth, or even raise some money individually. You can register before the event by mail, online (www.montgomeryhumane.com) or in person at the shelter for $20 a person. You can register the day of the event at the event for $25.00 a person(children 6 and under are allowed in free). You will get a cool T-shirt and a goody bag filled with great stuff. Everybody needs great stuff. All dogs must wear their rabies tags.

There is no better cause to support than the Montgomery Humane Shelter and no better form of stress reduction and exercise than Tai Chi. It’s gonna be a big day. Come be a part of it all.
