There is a view near the end of the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Kowaliga Bay Loop, which showcases approximately 2.5 miles of spectacular water views. While the whole trail is full of rewards like this one, the silhouettes of pine trees bring to mind the lyrics of “Kaw-Liga,” written by Hank Williams while he was staying at a Lake Martin lakeside cabin. It’s a legendary song, about unrequited love in “a heart of knotty pine.”

“Kaw-liga just stands there as lonely as can be,
And wishes he was still an old pine tree.”
